Stress Doesn’t Just Disappear
Your Body Is Holding More Than You Think
You can know something is wrong and still feel stuck. You can name the pattern, trace it back to where it started, understand why your parts do what they do, and still wake up at 2 am with your chest tight and your mind running.
That gap between knowing and actually shifting? A lot of it lives in the body.
Tension doesn’t just sit in your muscles. It travels. It shows up in the stories you tell yourself, in the low hum of worry you can’t quite explain, in the way you brace before conversations that should feel fine. It shapes what feels true about you, even when you know better.
This is one of the things we work with a lot at ICWC. And it’s worth talking about.
How tension gets stored
When something stressful happens, your nervous system responds. Your body mobilizes, your muscles contract, your breath gets shallow. That’s the stress response working the way it’s supposed to.
The problem is most of us don’t finish the cycle. We push through. We manage the moment and keep moving. The activation doesn’t discharge; it just gets absorbed. Layer that over months and years, and it starts to feel like just how you are.
In IFS terms, parts start carrying it. A hypervigilant part that stays on high alert. An inner guard that scans every room before you walk in. A young inner child who braced for something painful a long time ago and never got the message that it’s over. The tension becomes part of how those parts operate. It’s not dysfunction. It’s adaptation. It just costs a lot to maintain.
The stories that grow around it
Here’s what I notice with a lot of clients: the body holds tension and the mind builds a story to explain it.
That story sounds like: I’m too much. I always mess it up. People eventually leave. I have to hold it together or something will fall apart. These thoughts don’t feel like thoughts. They feel like facts. Because they’re not coming from logic, they’re coming from a felt sense that the nervous system has been carrying for a long time.
You can challenge the thought all day. Part of you will know it’s not entirely true. But if the body is still holding the original activation, the thought will keep feeling true. That’s not a failure of insight. It’s just how the nervous system works.
Fear, worry, and that hard-to-name flatness
Stored tension in the body often shows up emotionally as background anxiety. Not panic, just a low-level sense that something is slightly off. Or it shows up as worry that cycles without resolution, your mind trying to think its way to safety when the nervous system is what actually needs tending.
Sometimes it shows up as numbness. A flatness. Going through the motions and not knowing why nothing quite lands.
In somatic work, we talk about blocked energy, what happens when the body’s natural stress-release response gets interrupted and never completes. Over time, your system starts to treat that braced, contracted state as normal. Your shoulders live up near your ears. Your jaw is always a little clenched. Settled starts to feel foreign.
What helps: A multi-pronged approach
The work we do in the therapy room matters. Understanding your parts, making sense of where patterns come from, building the kind of trust with yourself that lets deeper healing happen. That’s real, and it’s important.
But talk and understanding can only take you so far if the body is still holding what the mind has already processed. That’s not a criticism of therapy. It’s just the reality of how we’re wired. The nervous system has its own language, and it responds to things that don’t involve words.
We offer two workshops this month that work directly with the body. Both are designed to complement the deeper work, not replace it. If you’re in therapy and feel like something is stuck, these are worth trying.
Release and Restore: A Somatic Healing Circle, Saturday, July 11, 10:00 to 11:30 am (second Sat of every month)
Lex leads this session using gentle guided movement to activate your body’s natural tension-release response. Your nervous system already knows how to discharge stress. This helps you access that capacity. Reiki follows for integration. The feedback we keep hearing is that people walk out feeling lighter than they have in months, sometimes after just one session. Nervous System Reset: Community Auricular Acupuncture, Thursday, July 23, 6:00 to 7:15 pm (Third Thursday of every month)
Small sterile needles placed at five specific points on the outer ear help shift your nervous system out of sympathetic activation and into rest. You sit quietly in a group for 30 to 45 minutes. No talking, no processing required. Just your body getting a structured opportunity to downshift. This protocol is used widely in trauma recovery settings because it works without requiring much from you at all. Register here
