You Can’t Heal Inside A Burning House

A lot of people come to therapy having already done a lot of work on themselves. They’ve read the books. They’ve journaled. Maybe they’ve even been in therapy before. And yet, they are still doing the same self-sabotaging, defensive strategies, still experiencing loneliness, and still repeating the same relational patterns. Something stays stuck.

That’s not a failure. That’s biology.

Here’s what I mean.

We all have parts of us — inner protectors — that developed for really good reasons. Maybe you learned early that being small kept you safe. That staying busy meant you didn’t have to feel things. That if you just held it together, nothing bad would happen. Those parts were smart. They kept you going.

But here’s the thing. Those parts don’t always get the memo that things have changed. They’re still scanning for threat. Still running old survival strategies in a present that doesn’t actually require them anymore.

When a part is activated — when it’s in protection mode — your whole nervous system is oriented toward one thing: safety. You’re not in your body. You’re not in the present. You’re not available for healing. All of your energy is going toward getting out of the burning house.

You can’t heal from inside a burning house. You have to get out first.

This is why awareness alone doesn’t always move the needle. You can know exactly where a pattern comes from and still not be able to change it. Because knowing something intellectually and actually healing it in your body are two very different things. Therapy can start with building awareness — and that matters. But real change happens when we move deeper than that.

The tricky part? The moment you try to take a step toward that deeper healing, your protective parts often say — hard no. Not because they’re bad. But because healing feels risky to them. Vulnerability feels risky. Change feels risky. So they block it. And you can feel worse, not better, if we push too hard too fast.

The body doesn’t respond to logic. You can’t think your way into feeling safe. The body needs proof it’s safe before it can move toward healing — and that proof only comes through experience, not understanding.

This is why we take our time. This is slow medicine.

Before we can ask your protectors to stand down, we have to earn their trust. We have to show your nervous system — through lived experience, not just words — that it’s actually okay to soften. That you’re safe. That you’re an adult now and you don’t need every alarm system running at full blast all the time.

One of the most powerful ways to do that? Give your nervous system regular experiences of regulation, rest, and joy.

This isn’t a luxury. It’s medicine.

When you do things that genuinely light you up, that pull you into full presence, your nervous system starts to learn a new baseline. Things like making art, moving your body, being in nature, playing music, cooking something you love, laughing with people who feel safe (those are just a few). These aren’t distractions from healing. They’re part of it. Neuroscience backs this up — repeated experiences of safety and ease create real change in the brain. Neural plasticity. Your nervous system can actually learn to soften. And when it does, your protectors start to trust that it’s okay to let healing in.

This is exactly why we created our wellness workshops — not as a replacement for therapy, but as a way to build that foundation. To give your system consistent exposure to what regulated, safe, and grounded actually feel like.

Nervous System Reset: Community Auricular Acupuncture

Targets specific points on the outer ear — meridians directly linked to activating the parasympathetic response. Your body’s rest and digest mode. It’s quiet, gentle, and genuinely regulating. April 23rd and May 28th.

Release and Restore: A Somatic Healing Circle

Works with the body’s natural shaking and tension release response — helping move old stress out of the muscles that have been holding tight for way too long. May 9th.

Grounded Flow

Weaves movement, breathwork, vagal toning, and sound together — all designed to guide your system out of stress and into presence. June 22nd.

Mind-Body Moon Circle

A biweekly space for grounding, reflection, and connection — movement, meditation, sound healing, and community. May 10th and May 24th.

Here’s what I want you to know. We’re not trying to turn you into a different person. You’re still you. You always were. What we’re doing is creating the conditions where the parts that have been working so hard to protect you — for so long — finally get to rest. And when they do, there’s more room for the real you to show up. To live from your heart. To stop bracing and start actually being here. The extreme feelings and reactions of these parts actually start to soften.

That’s worth taking your time for.

If any of these workshops feel like a place to start, we’d love to have you. You don’t have to be in therapy with us. You just have to be curious about what it feels like to exhale.

If you are interested in exploring these parts with your therapist, mention it to them.  Or start with one of our IFS-informed therapists.
